ASKO EASE

Future dose compartment

Me and fellow designer Lisa Modin redesigned the logic of the Asko washing machine and created a new system for proper dosage of detergent.

”I POUR THE DETERGENT BY FEELING”

”I DON´T REALLY KNOW WHAT THE SYMBOLS MEAN”

”HERE IN SWEDEN YOU HAVE DIFFERENT SYMBOLS”

We interviewed 11 persons and visited two of them in their home to see how they did their washing process. We saw a big potential in the dosing process because most of the persons went by feeling when they dosed the detergent. They did not measure the detergent by weight of the laundry.

”How might we achive proper dosage of detergent?”

Quick prototype

The test station was builded to see how much detergent people use when washing their clothes.

We had 5 kg laundry and asked the users to fill the machine with the laundry and then dose the amount of detergent that they would normally do for that amount of laundry.

User test - 24 people

After they dosed the amount of detergent we had prepared the right amount for that load and showed them that and compared their amount with it.

ASKO EASE

New laundry experience

In Asko Ease the layout of the machine has been inverted. Starting with the display on the left and having the dose compartment to the far right. This is because the amount of detergent depends on the weight and soiling, therefore the user will type that in before dosing the detergent.

Since Asko claim to be an environmentally friendly company we think that the design should reflect that. That’s why we have removed the ability to use prewash and softener.

How to use

Interface_10 (kopia).jpg

The machine will weigh the laundry to give the opportunity to fill it up to full capacity before choosing program and level of soiling. When the program and soiling has been chosen, Asko Ease tell’s the user to dose a certain number and the user get access to the dose compartment.

The important steps before dosing

Function

We are using a system 1-8. This is based on a research where we compared a lot of different detergent and made a calculation based on that. We wanted to go away from the milliliter thinking because that confuses the users, and focus on this scale instead, to make it easier for the user to dose the right amount of detergent.

So, the machine tells you to dose 3, then you will slide the divider to 3. After that you will pour the detergent up to the line.
