LUMI

Light up to see and to be seen - a future working jacket

Lumi is a jacket with integrated light used by professional workers in low lighting environments. Lighting positioned around the body creates a broad spread of light while the wrist-light enables the user to focus on details. The jacket is equipped with ”Anti dazzling” technology that reduces the risk of glaring colleagues.

Working in low light conditions

Observing

We started off by observing tower climbers from the company Telog during 2 weeks in Sälen and Gävle, Sweden. By seeing their daily routine, workflow, installation, and by interviewing them we got a broad understanding of their work.

Analyzing

Back in Umeå, we analyzed the material we had. We sorted our videos and pictures and did a timeline of their work tasks over the different days. We tried to remember all the different steps they did to be able to explore problem areas and design opportunities later on.

Workshop

We had several workshops to identify design opportunities, sorting ideas into topics and to ideate around the topics.

"The light becomes very pointed with a headlamp, it would be nice to have a larger spread of the light. That would make it easier to see when working." -Lisa

How can we improve working in low light conditions through light and illumination?

Initial concepts

I defined three initial concepts and presented them to Ericsson and Telog. The first concept is a vest with integrated lights on the body. The second concept is a jacket with the same functions as the first concept but offering light around the wrists. The third concept is a to have light around the safety rail.

Feedback from Ericsson

Concept development

I chose to move on with concept 2, the working jacket with integrated lights. To understand the behaviour of the light, I built a quick mock-up of the jacket and tried it out in school.

Findings

When using a headlamp we direct the light with the help of our neck. The light are also very pointed. By placing the light on our upper body we improve the ergonomics and the spread of the light. By having a light around the wrists, we enable a detail light.
